Preparation for Surgery and What to do Afterward

 

 

THE DAY BEFORE SURGERY

 

EATING AND DRINKING

 

MEDICATIONS

 

CLOTHING

 

To confirm your arrival, please call DSCK at 928-681-4214 between 8:00am and 4:00pm, Monday-Friday.

 

Keep in mind that all laboratory testing must be completed prior to coming to the Center for your procedure.

 

DO eat a light meal for supper.

DO brush your teeth and use mouthwash, but do not swallow.

 

DO NOT eat or drink ANYTHING after midnight or the morning of your surgery.

 

DO NOT smoke, drink alcohol, chew gum, or eat candy after midnight or the morning of your surgery.

 

DO take with a small sip of WATER the morning of your surgery the medications you normally take for these conditions only:

* Blood Pressure

* Seizures

* Asthma

* Heart

 

DO NOT take insulin or diabetic pill.

 

DO wear:

* Something Loose-fitting and Comfortable

* Flat Shoes

 

DO NOT wear/bring:

* Contact Lenses

* False Eyelashes

* Make-up

* Jewelry

* Nail Polish

* Hairpieces or Clips

* Valuables

 

THE DAY OF SURGERY

RECOVERY

 

Arrival Time is one hour earlier than scheduled surgery to allow for registration and pre-op care.

 

Bring:

* Drivers License

* Insurance Card

* Financial Papers

 

Parking is located to the north of the Center, with a drive-up lane immediately in front of the building.

 

Arrive on time so your surgery can be done on time or earlier.

 

Unexpected situations may cause delays. Do not plan other appointments or bring small children.

 

* Receptionist will greet you

 

* Patient Accounts will discuss financial terms

 

* Nurse will check you in

 

* Type of anesthesia will be explained

 

* IV will be started

 

* Surgeon has already discussed the procedure with you

 

You will be in the Recovery Room 45 minutes to 2 hours.

 

Pain, nausea and other problems will be treated.

 

You will be discharged in a wheelchair with written instructions and prescriptions.

 

FOLLOWING SURGERY

PROBLEMS

 

You may some help for a few days, depending on the surgery.

 

* Fill your prescriptions and follow the written instructions given to you.

 

* DO NOT smoke or drink alcohol for 24 hours.

 

* Your routine medications and new prescriptions will be reviewed with you prior to discharge.

 

* You will not be able to drive, care for your children, make important decisions, or do mechanical tasks for 24 hours after your surgery.

 

* Arrange for someone to stay with at home.

 

* DSCK staff will call you following your surgery to check and you and answer any questions.

 

Call your doctor should you have difficulties.

 

 

CANCELLATION OF SURGERY

 

REASONS

 

If you arrive at DSCK not having followed your pre-operative instructions, your surgery may be cancelled.

 

* If you eat or drink anything after midnight before your surgery or morning of your surgery.

 

* If you do not have a responsible adult with you at the Center who can remain during your surgery and drive you home or accompany in a taxi. You may not ride the bus home.

 

* If you have not arranged for a responsible adult to care for you at home the night following surgery.
